Emma Pearl Mayes, affectionately known as "Red" to her close friends and relatives, was born December 4, 1943, in Lafayette County, Mississippi, to Elijah Mitch Liggins and Willie Pearl Hamilton Liggins.
Emma Pearl confessed Christ at an early age and joined East St. Peter M.B. Church where she served faithfully until her health failed. She served as an usher and a member of the Mother's Board.
Emma Pearl received her education at Oxford Training School. She was married to Jessie Mayes. And as a working mother, she gained employment with the Chambers Stove Factory and later with Emerson Electric until the late 80's. After a back injury, she retired and filled her time with the things she enjoyed: fishing, eating out (particularly seafood), watching Ole Miss football, and loving her grandchildren. She was a great supporter of her grandchildren, attending all of their sports events whenever possible.
Emma Pearl made her transition from this earthly life to a heavenly eternal life on Thursday, May 30, 2019, while at Baptist Memorial Hospital/NM. She is loving remember and survived by her children: Allen Liggins, Lindy Liggins, Wanda Mayes and Charlotte Mayes James all of Oxford MS; five grandchildren: Desmond (Jasmine) Mayes, Demonte Mitchell, Darrius Liggins, Quentin James and Tyra Liggins; two great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, a brother: John Henry Liggins; one uncle: Willie "Jake" (Jackie) Liggins, and one aunt: Lillie Ward. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.
Emma Pearl is preceded in death by her parents: Mitch and Willie Pearl Liggins.
