Alfred Tyson, Jr.

Life Reflections

Alfred Tyson Jr., was born to the late Alfred Tyson Sr., and Eva Mae Toles, on April 11, 1936. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined North Hopewell M.B. Church where he served as BTU Superintendent for many years and was a faithful member until his health failed.

Alfred married Willie Maebelle Burt on January 20, 1963, built his family's home where they were blessed to raise10 children and where he resided for 58 years. He was once employed at Illinois Railroad Company, Plywood later known as Georgia Pacific, Camco Construction and with the Lafayette County Road Maintenance crew.  Later, he became an entrepreneur of S&T Logging with his brother-in-law, James Shaw.

Alfred known to many as “Junior Tyson,” enjoyed the outside especially sitting on the porch. He enjoyed watching old sitcoms such as Sanford & Son, Gunsmoke, Wheel of Fortune and Wrestling/Boxing. His favorite foods and desserts were sweet potatoes, blackeye peas, chocolate cake and sweet tea. He was also blessed with a “green thumb” as he could put a seed or anything with a root in the ground and it would grow.

Junior wasn’t a man who would sit down long even on Holidays; he believed every day was a workday--always tinkering around outside whether it was welding or working on his logging trucks. Most everyone knew Junior was a man who said what he meant and meant what he said by passing down his wisdom and tough love to his children, such as, “If you’re going to do something, do it right the first time, so you don’t have to do it again”, “Get grown and get some sense of your own, and “Be a leader not a follower.” Junior was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need whether it was cutting grass, bulldozing, or volunteering and mentoring the younger generation at the Taylor Community Center on Sunday afternoons. His favorite songs were “Send Me I’ll Go” and “God Is Able (older version)."

While lovingly cared for and surrounded by his children and grandchildren, on March 25, 2025, Alfred transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home. He leaves to cherish his memories, 10 children: Christopher Buford of Oxford, MS, Callie (Rochester) Brassell, Sheryel (Lorienzer, Jr.) Green, Alfred (Annie) Tyson III, Angelia Tyson, Mary (Robert) HuBrins, Martin (Patricia) Tyson, Girlinda Tyson, Shelia Tyson, James (Stephanie C) Tyson all of Taylor, MS; two grandchildren to whom he was legal guardian: Keeyon Tyson of Columbus, Ohio and Camry Tyson of Jackson, MS, 32 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and 21 great-great grandchildren.

He also leaves to cherish his memories: his sister: Ara Mae “Haley” Rogers of Pasadena, CA; brother: David “Rookie” Tyson of Flint, MI; a host of nieces, nephews, nine brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law, and other relatives and friends.

Alfred was preceded in death by his loving wife: Willie Maebelle Tyson and daughter: Wanda L. Tyson; two great-grandchildren: Ida Booker and Jadyn Tyson; his parents: Alfred, Sr. and Eva Tyson; eight brothers: Roosevelt Goliday, Lee Arthur Goliday, Nathaniel Tyson, Jack Tyson, Aaron Tyson, Collier Tyson, Simmie Tyson and Billy Tyson; three sisters: Galinda Tyson, Louise Patton and Emma Jeanette Ragland.
