Alice McEwen Mayes was born April 25, 1932 to the late Manford Webb, Sr. and Fannie Cannon in Oxford, MS.
“Sis,” as she was affectionately called, professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Tobby Tubby M.B. Church. She later moved her membership to New Beginnings M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor Will Owens. Alice loved her Pastor and church very much.
Alice was united in matrimony to Jessie Mayes, a loving and devoted husband, and they were blessed to share 50 years together. She was employed as a food service worker for the University of Mississippi for several years.
In her spare time, Alice absolutely loved to go fishing, tend to her flowers, spend time with her grand and great grandchildren, and cook. She also loved to get dressed up and was a spiffy dresser. She always kept children and even raised some as her own.
On Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North MS, Alice traded her earthly life for eternal rest with the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Jessie J. Mayes of Oxford, MS; children, Oscar Westbrook, Eddie Lee McEwen, and Fannie Dortch all of Oxford, MS; two stepdaughters, Denise Williams and Wanda Mayes both of Oxford, MS; 9 grandchildren, Regina, James, Cassandra, Mary Alice, Richard, Christopher, Stephanie, and Calvin; 35 great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren, siblings, Manford Webb, Jr. (Sharon), Allen Webb (Charlesetta), Beatrice Pollard, Juanita Webb, and Estie Webb all of Memphis, TN; 10 brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; special cousin, Eloise Hampton of Oxford, MS and a host of other relatives and friends.
