Angela “Angie” Regina Cohran was born November 9, 1971 in Oxford, Mississippi to Sylvester Cohran and Odessa Davidson Cohran.
Angie received her formal education at Oxford City Schools where she was able to foster a passion for allied health and create lifelong bonds with her peers. As a young adult, she was a singer in the “Wings of Joy” Gospel Group and began worshiping God as an outward expression of her faith. Angie matured in her faith by formally accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She also matured in her academics and graduated from Oxford High School in the Class of 1989. Afterwards, she began her education at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Mississippi and later earned an Associate of Arts degree in Social Work in 1992. Although Northwest Mississippi Community College did not offer “Spades” or “Cards” as a declared major or minor, she often played with her friends and became a well known card player and the type of person that “did not meet a stranger”. Shortly after graduating from Northwest Community College, she entered the workforce and became wedded to Tony Holland, Sr, to whom she would give birth to Tony Holland, Jr. in 1995 , Lydia Holland in 1999, and Aaliyah Holland in 2000. Inspired to chase her dreams of higher education and offer her children an example of academic achievement, she enrolled at the University of Mississippi with social work as her declared major and later graduated in the Class of 2003.
Among the many positions she held with the Lafayette County School District, Oxford School District, Mississippi Department of Human Services, Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services, C.A.A.P, Inc. Memphis Rehabilitation Center, Oxford Park Commission, Ability Works Rehabilitation Center, Shelby County (TN) Public School District, North Mississippi Regional Center, and the Mississippi State Veterans Home, Angie was able to conquer over twenty years of social work and administrative experience. Angie believed that her social work credentials were a formal way for her to minister to people and do God’s will! Throughout the various counties and states she traveled to, she would often be found encouraging others and reminding them that “the storm is temporary”. One of her proudest accomplishments was her feature in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal October 2012 Newspaper that described how her “work was play”.
Despite all of her titles and accomplishments, none of those titles held a place in her heart like “Mom” and “Gigi”. Angie loved being a mom to Tony Jr., Lydia, and Aaliyah Holland, and grandmother to Tony Holland III. She also enjoyed playing the “mom” role for many people within the Lafayette County community. Whatever her babies needed, she would pray, work, and wait until God provided. The lesson she taught and reiterated to her children daily was “Trust God” and “Love each other—- y’all are all y’all got.”
Angela Regina Cohran’s legacy is left to be cherished by her one son Tony Holland, Jr. of Oxford, MS; two (2) daughters Lydia Holland of Saint Louis, MO and Aaliyah Holland of Oxford, MS; three (3) god-children Terry Williams, Jr. of Dallas, TX, Darnecia Lester of Atlanta, GA, and Brylin lester of Atlanta, GA; five (5) siblings Lorna (Quentin) Berry of Oxford, MS, Larry Davidson of Memphis,TN; Marilyn (Reginald) McClain of Oxford, MS; Melvin Cohran of Saint Louis, MO, and Pamela Cohran of Arlington, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews that she loved as her own. She is preceded in death by her parents Sylvester and Odessa Cohran and her siblings Michael Cohran, Edward Cohran, Vonzetta Cohran-Sims, Sherrie Cohran, Robert Dickerson and Conniell Cohran-Burnett.
