Annie Hill Obituary

Mrs. Annie Lee Gillom Hill, daughter of the late Oliver Gillom and Susie Hamilton Gillom, was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi on April 15, 1927.

She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined East St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her death. She served on the Mother Board and Culinary Committee until her health declined.

She was married in holy matrimony to the late Mr. James Walter Fisher Hill on April 5, 1941; in Lafayette County; unto this union 4 children were born, two preceded her in death (James Earl Hill and Walter Hill). Annie and her husband James moved to Chicago, IL and lived there for a few years before returning to their beloved Oxford, MS.

Affectionately called “Modear,” she was a homemaker and babysitter to many families in the Oxford Community. She also served as a Foster Grandparent at the North Mississippi Regional Center for several years.  Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, gardening; especially caring for her flowers, and working wordsearch puzzles.  Modear enjoyed sharing her crafts, wisdom, and knowledge with others.  She loved her family, friends, her church, and community; and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

She departed this life on August 29, 2022; at the Holly Spring Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

She is survived by her son, Willie Frank (La’Brenda) Hill of Memphis, TN; daughter, Dorothy (Robert) Schoneman of Port St. Lucie, FL; Sister-In-Law, Ella Ree Gillom of Abbeville, MS; Eleven Grandchildren, Bishop Willie (Sharon) Hoskins, Sheree Green Hammond, James Earl (Lynn) Hill, Jr., Joseph Hill, and Delora Hill all of Chicago, IL; Steven Green and Scotty Green of Port Saint Lucie, FL; Shadra Green of Oxford, MS; Terrence (Trisha) Hill of Oceanside, CA, Zita Hill of Atlanta, GA, and Lucretia Hill of Memphis, TN.  Twenty Great Grandchildren, Nine Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends including Bessie Dixon.

Annie was also preceded in death by her husband, James Walter Fisher Hill, and siblings; Earl Gillom, George Gillom, Jimmie Gillom, Lena Gillom, Willie B. Gillom, Oliver Gillom, Jr., and John Henry Gillom.
