Barbara Joanne Hayden Hancock was born June 9th, 1932, in Roanoke, VA to Lynn Wilburn and Annie Mae Hayden. She was the first born of 5 children. She was raised and schooled in Roanoke, VA. She transitioned from this life peacefully at home on February 8,2021.
Barbara married Duconz Hancock, and left Roanoke to become the wife of a military man. There were five children, 2 girls and 3 boys. She had the opportunity to travel and live in many different places.
Barbara was known by many names to her family, Bagabee, by her daughter, Debra’s children, BJ by granddaughter Melissa and grandma by her other grandchildren. I think the names she was most proud of was mom and the names her grandchildren called her. She loved her family and was very protective of her children and had the privilege of not having to work outside the home.
Barbara enjoyed league bowling and playing bingo. She did this for many years until she stopped to care for her eldest daughter. She was also a member of Canaan Baptist Church and enjoyed going to Bible break on Tuesday. She remained a member until her health started failing. Barbara moved to Oxford, MS, where she lived with her daughter, Debra, and son- in -law, Jimmy McGlawn. She loved listening to music, especially by Sam Cook. Her favorite songs were Cupid and Save the Last Dance For Me.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Duconz, daughter Antoinette, son Duconz Jr. and first-born grandson Matthew Grogan.
Those left to cherish her sweet memories are her daughter Debra McGlawn (Jimmy), Oxford, MS; sons, Leonard Hancock Killeen, TX and Andre Hancock (Tymara), San Antonio, TX; one 8 grandchildren, 6 great grands; sister, Jean Smith; one brother, Lewis Hayden, both of Roanoke, VA; a special friend Wilma Taylor, Columbus, GA, excellent neighbors and friends, Hazel Wilson and her husband also of Columbus, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
