Dexter Cornelius Robinson Belcher was born on September 23, 1962, in Oxford, Mississippi. He passed away peacefully in his sleep of an acute heart attack on September 30, 2024.
THE EARLY YEARS:
Dexter was a beautiful baby, with a head full of curly hair. Always so very active. Dexter moved to Los Angeles, California, with his mom and dad, Beulah Faye and Cleveland Belcher, Jr., at the age of one. The family later moved to Pomona, California, where Dexter attended North San Antonio Elementary School, Palomares Jr. High School, and graduated from Pomona High School in 1980.
Dexter was active an all-around athlete, he played little league baseball at Ted Greene Park where he played first baseman on the PFF team; was wide receiver on the Pop Warner Football team; basketball at Pomona High School, but also created his own basketball tournaments in the backyard where he and the guys played way into the night. He fished a lot at Pudding Stone, skateboarded a bit, swam every day during the summertime, and held his own basketball tournament in the backyard for hours and minibike riding.
FIRST JOBS AND WORK ETHIC:
Dexter had multiple jobs as a teenager and throughout his life. He was a young entrepreneur having his own lawnmower and cutting grass for neighbors; was the best paper delivery boy ever, riding his bike throughout the northside of Pomona afterschool daily throwing the papers on time and accurately. Dexter also worked at a local hospital in the kitchen when he was sixteen. He joined the military right after high school where he served in the Navy. He later worked at the Veteran Administration in Inglewood as an in-tact specialist, got his CBL license and drove big rigs and was a shuttle driver at LAX.
LOVE AND SERVICE FOR OTHERS AND HIS TEAMS:
He had a heart to serve and to save others – both people and animals. He had stray dogs that “followed him home”, pet pigeons, hamsters that he snuck in the house, rabbits, chickens in coops, fish, lizards, anything with life. Anyone who met Dexter will tell you that he left a lasting memory; you knew when he was in the room. His laughter stretched loud and far, and his storytelling drew you into the story. He was such a “cool breeze”, sharp dresser, everything had to match, t-shirts had to be clean and pressed, jeans creased, shoes matching, and don’t forget the shades, hats and caps. He will always be a Cali guy, especially when it comes to sports -- the Lakers, Dodgers and the 49ers were his favorite teams. He sharply sported their gear anytime he could.
LOVE OF CHRIST:
Dexter was always a believer in and had a relationship with the Lord. He was baptized three times – he wanted to get it right – once when he was a teenager, again as a young adult, and the third time in his fifties. He had a thirst to learn and grow in the Lord, and no matter what his life status, that thirst and hunger was strong, and he kept God in his heart.
Dexter had a great sweet spirit. Even in his darkest hours, he was the light to others by witnessing and testifying about the Lord to lift their spirit. He encouraged people who were not as low as he was and others who were even lower. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone, even a stranger if he thought they needed it. Whatever Dexter had, you had -- because he would share it. When Dexter passed away, he went at peace in his sleep. The picture of him sleeping is comforting, he had a smile on his face, and God in his heart. It looks like he was saying “Hello Jesus”.
