Hazelteen Jenkins Obituary

Hazelteen Harris Jenkins was born March 14, 1945, to Cora Lee Pegues Hilliard in Oxford, Lafayette County, MS. She was blessed to have two loving mothers as she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Lenora Pegues Smith, and Winston Smith. She was lovingly welcomed into the life of her bonus dad, Mr. Theo Hilliard. To know her was to love her as she was affectionately known as Hazel, Ms. Hazel, Ms. Sang, San and perhaps more importantly as Mama San by all who knew and loved her.

Having been introduced to Christ at any early age, Hazel accepted Christ and was a life-long member of East Providence M.B. Church. As a faithful member, she dutifully served on the Usher Board, Choir, Missionary Society, Kitchen Committee and Sunday School teacher. Her passion for nursing and taking care of others extended to her church family and she willingly served as a Nurse consultant for the congregation.

San, as she was affectionately known by her family, classmates and friends received her early education from Providence School, and was a proud graduate of the Oxford Training School (OTS) class of 1962. She loved her dear OTS and travelled as much as she could with her fellow classmates as they celebrated their education from City to City. San loved to sew, and for many years, she was employed as a seamstress at Kellwood company in Oxford, MS, as well as sewing for the community and her family. She pursued her real passion and enrolled in Nursing School. In 1980, she earned a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) degree and worked for many years caring for others at the Oxford-Lafayette County Hospital which later became Baptist Memorial Hospital - North MS. She later gained employment with the Gastroenterology Associates of North Mississippi and remained there with her work family until her retirement. She was also considered the Rivers Hill nurse and assisted anyone in need.

On April 21, 1963, San married Cornelius Jenkins and to this union three children were born:  Charles, Chenille, and Terence. Affectionately known as Charlie Brown, Nille and Jody, they were the loves of her life, and she prayed for them daily as any good mother would do.

Hazel departed her life on November 24, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis, TN. Her youngest son, Terence, died one day prior.

She leaves to mourn her passing a devoted son and daughter:  Charles Jenkins (Paula Annette) of Oxford, MS; and Chenille Jenkins Lynch (Camod) of Memphis, TN,   Seven(7) grandchildren  - Lucas Hickonbottom and Cornelius Johnson both of Oxford, MS; Marticus Gilliom of Hickman, KY; Tequila Gillom of Horn Lake, MS; Camod 2, Cameron, and Corbin Lynch of Memphis, TN; Five (5) Great-grandchildren;  A very special cousin who was like a sister – Martha J. She was proceeded in death by her son, Terence “Jody” Jenkins; one grandchild – Jasmine Brown; parents; brothers, Lenwood “Steve” Harris, and Charles “Bill” Hilliard; sisters, Betty Sims, Jeanette Thomas, and Marcelene “Marce” Avant.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
