Mr. Henry "Hank" Thompson
Following a prolonged illness, it has pleased our Heavenly Father, in his wise providence to take from this veil of tears to himself in heaven the soul of our departed brother Henry Clifton Thompson. Henry departed this life on April 8th, 2021 at the age of 76.
Affectionately known as “Hank” to all his friends and family, Henry was born on September 13th, 1944 in Oxford MS to Jimmy and Mabel Thompson. He was the fifth child to this union
Henry was baptized in the Methodist Church at an early age and later attended Trinity Lutheran church where he served as the president of the congregation, a member of the Lutheran Layman's League, a member of Aid Association for Lutherans and a Senior Deacon.
Henry graduated from Central High School in 1963 where he excelled in football and construction trades. He later served his country during the Vietnam War era as a Sergeant in the US Army Signal Corp.
After leaving the army, Henry moved to Gary IN where he accepted a position at United States Steel Corporation. His career there spanned 37 years. He also worked 25 years as a Senior Mechanic for Sears Automotive centers. Additionally, Henry was a respected landlord and worked a myriad of other jobs during his lifetime.
Henry also served his community in various capacities. He was the president of the 5th and Connecticut St Block Club, involved in numerous political activities and considered to be a neighborhood dad who provided for and watched over local children as if they were his own. Finally, Henry was a leading catalyst for the Eastside Gary Rejuvenation project.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Carolyn, three of his brothers; James, Charles, and Leroy, his sister Mary and his daughter Brandi.
Henry leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Barbara, his brothers; Thomas (Joan) Thompson of Oklahoma City, OK and Willie (Rhodis) Thompson of Memphis, TN, his children; Lonnie (Talera) Thompson of Orlando, FL, Carolyn Thompson of Southaven, MS, Derrick (Patricia) Atkins of Fishers, IN, Tracy Roberts of Westfield, IN, Sherri (Wallace) Stinson of Olive Branch MS, Todd (La’Shawn) White of Cincinnati, OH, lifelong friend, Tommy Taylor of Chicago IL, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
