Herron Thompson, Jr. Obituary

Herron Douglas Thompson, Jr, son of the late Annie Mae Jeeter and Herron Thompson, Sr, was born on November 16, 1947, in Oxford, MS. Son, as he was affectionately called, was his mother’s oldest child and was reared in the Price Hill community by his grandmother, the late Hattie Harris. He had an active childhood and was surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins whom he remained close to throughout his life. Herron was raised attending Greater St John Missionary Baptist Church where he confessed his hope in God’s saving grace and was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

As a teenager, Herron often worked with his grandfather, Rogers Thompson, where he gained carpentry skills that became beneficial to him later in life. The skills he learned from “Papa Rogers” afforded him the ability to serve the community performing various home improvement projects.

Herron attended Central High School in Oxford where he lived out his athletic prowess as a member of the Central High School Eagles football team. As a result of his athletic talent, he earned a football scholarship to Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, MS. After completing his Associates degree at Coahoma, Herron enrolled in the United States Army. He served a two-year tour of duty overseas in Germany. He was a member of the platoon responsible for guarding the Czechoslovakian border. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Oxford, started a family and enrolled at Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs. Herron was determined to complete his studies and often attended class with his oldest daughter in tow. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts. He was briefly employed with the University of MS before establishing his own home improvement/restoration business which he maintained until his health began to fail.

Herron lived his life live and in color. He loved his family and would go the extra mile whenever asked. In 2019, he decided to share his love for life again and united in marriage with Linda Conway. Linda loved and cared for her husband until he closed his eyes for eternal rest on March 23, 2022.

Herron’s memory will linger in the hearts and lives of all who knew him. His legacy will be cherished by his wife, Linda Thompson of Oxford, MS; Daddy’s girls, Herrita Thompson-Johnson (Henry) and Tamara Thompson-Jackson (Marvin) of Atlanta, GA; Greta Burress (Shannon) of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Aerial Carruthers (Dwayne) and Nevaeh Thornton of Atlanta, GA; Isaiah Johnson of Memphis, TN; great-grandson, Dwayne III of Atlanta, GA; bonus children; Qutisha Conway, William Conway, Jameron Conway, Quincy Conway and Katherine Williams; bonus grandchildren, Ni’Kia Conway, Keavion Hervey, Kaziya Hervey, Ja’Kiya Conway and Aiden Conway; Brothers, Douglas Thompson (Marcie) of Davenport, IA; Allen Thompson (Denise) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Glenn Thompson and Michael Thompson of Flint, MI; Sherby Gordon of St. Louis, MO; sister, Joyce Ann Gordon of St. Louis, MO; Aunts, Burnette Thompson of St Louis, MO and Angelean Jones of Jackson, MS; special cousins James Johnson, Charles and Ethel Johnson of Oxford, MS; Hattie Aikerson of Birmingham, AL; along with a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
