James Allen Cook

James Cook Obituary

James Allen Cook, son of Russell Mead Cook and Magnolia Burt Cook, was born in Oxford, Mississippi, July 27, 1944. He was the tenth child born to Russell and Magnolia. He received his formal education at Central High School in Oxford, Mississippi. He professed a hope in Christ and attended New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi.

In 1962, James was united in matrimony with Zula Mae Boles and to this union four children were born. The first son, Lee Russell, did not survive; after which three sons: Allen Fitzgerald, Curtis Anthony and Vincent Lenard were born. Years later, James was united in matrimony with Betty Ann "Bertile" Townsend and he gained a bonus son, James Edward Townsend.

James was employed at the Beacon Restaurant in 1960, and worked there 51 years. He held many positions at the Beacon but later became head Chef. He was interviewed and honored by the Oxford Eagle Newspaper upon his retirement for many years of service. Although James cooked all dishes in the kitchen; chicken and dumplings, and chicken and dressing were his signature dishes. Also over the years, James raised hogs and cattle.

If you knew James, then you know that he was a caring and compassionate individual with a serving heart. He showed much love toward his family and his community. When his brother, Floyd fell ill, he and his brother Dave went to Chicago and brought him back to Oxford where he and his wife became Floyd's primary caregivers for seven years.

On Sunday, December 31, 2023. James Allen Cook went home to be with the Lord while visiting in Fredericksburg VA. He is lovingly remembered by those whose who will cherish his memory: his wife: Bettie Ann "Bertile:" His children: Allen Fitzgerald (Brunell), Curtis Anthony, Vincent Lenard (Joann) and James Edward Townsend; his brother: Dave (Betty); grandchildren: Allandria, Eric, Nicholas, Curtis Jr., Jamara Coppage, Cameron, Kyden, Bentley, Braxton, Denzel Buford and Aaliya Watson; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, In Laws: Stella (Hubert) Murry, Darlene (William) Murry, Georgia Lester and Walter Townsend, along with other relatives and friends.

James is preceded in death by his parents: Russell and Magnolia Cook, one son: Lee Russell Cook, sisters: Charlie Mae Cook Herod and Alice Faye Cook Hewlett, brothers: Stanford, Alfred, Melvin, Russell Jr., David and Floyd.
