James Eldridge Young, Jr., a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi. He was the son of James Eldridge Young, Sr. and Bernice (Delmare) Young.
James grew up in the Gert Town neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born in New Orleans in 1931 and attended Booker T. Washington High School where he graduated as valedictorian. At the age of 20, James, Jr. enlisted in the United State Marine Corps, proudly serving his country and achieving the rank of Corporal. He courageously fought overseas in the Korean War, where he was wounded at the Hook in October of 1952. For his service, he received numerous honors, including the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the National
Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
Following his honorable discharge, James Jr. pursued higher education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, earning a Juris Doctorate. While at Southern, he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. He was a practicing attorney for most of his life and he was a member of Bartlett United Methodist Church in Bartlett, Tennessee.
James, Jr. is survived by his sister: Mary Louise Lexing; his three children: James E. Young, III, Adrienne R. Young, and Darrin A. Young; his ex-wife: Eddiemae (Wilson) Young; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family. His loved ones will cherish his love for family and his life-long commitment to educating and uplifting others.
A memorial service celebrating James Jr.’s life will be arranged by his
family.
