James Mathis Obituary

James Earl Mathis was born on November 14, 1955 in Oxford, MS to Early William Mathis and Nona Francis Banks-Mathis.

James was well-known for his strong-will, determination, loud, charismatic voice & his infectious laugh!  In his spare time, James enjoyed farming – providing fresh fruit and vegetables to James Food Center and his community. He showed unwavering love and support for his community, children, family and grandchildren, raising his grandchild, Nasir Dukes, with the help of family.

James was a graduate of Oxford High School. Afterwards, he worked for Emerson Electric Company as a Sub-Foreman where he met his best friend, John Wesley Dukes. He worked for Emerson & North Mississippi Regional Center for several years from which he retired.

He is survived by his daughters: Stephanie Dukes and Ronsi Morgan, both of Southaven, MS, Tamatha Dukes of Racine, WI and LaBriska Gordon of Tampa, FL; his son: Antonio Morgan of Oxford, MS; Brothers: Perry (Willie Lois) Mathis, Milton Mathis and David Hilliard all of Oxford, MS, and David Mathis of Coffeeville, MS; Sisters: Bettie Turnage, Vivian Goliday, Lydia (Lee) Pegues, Marie Mathis, Annie Mathis, and Jeanette (Kenneth) Pegues all of Oxford, MS; Louise Mathis, Margaret Mathis and Maggie Stokes of Florida; 16 Grandchildren, 3 Great-Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving is his special friend, Mary Flowers and 7 Grandchildren.

Preceding him in joining the Lord are: His father: Early William Mathis; his mother: Nona Francis Banks-Mathis; Grandparents: Samantha and Will Banks; Brother: William Earl Mathis and Aunt: Doris Cathey.

In lieu of flowers any donations can be directed to Stephanie Dukes.  If you would like to support the family with meals please direct them to Lydia Pegues.
