James W. "Jake" Hewlett, the son of Jimmie and Orean Wadlington Hewlett, affectionately called Uncle Jake by his nieces and nephews, was born April 27, 1940, in Lafayette County, Mississippi. Jake was reared in a loving, happy, Christian home. He accepted Christ at an early age, but in 1956, he joined Clear Creek MB Church where he attended until his health failed.
Jake received his early education at the West Springhill Community School and the Oxford Training School District. He was employed as a line worker with Borgwarner, Inc., in Water Valley, Mississippi until his retirement. Not one to sit still, Jake later found part-time employment at Kroger in Oxford, Mississippi and you could often find him there ready to offer you a good, funny conversation. Jake was united in marriage to Alice Faye Cook Hewlett, who preceded him in death.
Jake was a charismatic character. Yes, flamboyant, confident and stylish. He dressed to impress and he dressed for success, everyday. Jake had a smile that you couldn't help but smile back at. He enjoyed preaching God's word, visiting the sick, traveling and shopping. Did I say shopping? Yes, shopping. The outfits had to be on point, from head to toe.
As much as Jake was loved and cared for by his family, there was another who loved him more and His name is Jesus. On Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while at Diversicare of Batesville, Jesus sent a message to him advising that it was time to come home. Not to Tyler Cove, but to his heavenly home where he would live for eternity and he could even bring that bright smile with him. Jake read the message and obeyed his call.
Rest on Uncle Jake. We'll see you later. Lovingly remembered by his care givers: Alisa Thompson, Shawn and Ann Pettis of Oxford, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jake is preceded in death by his parents: Jimmie and Orean Wadlington Hewlett; his wife: Alice Faye Hewlett; his daughter: Vickie Hewlett; and siblings: Jimmie Lee Hewlett, Booker T. Taylor, Fairybell Carothers, Altha Mae Watters, Amy Patton, Fannie Yankaway and Susie Lee Thompson.
