Jimmie Gillom Obituary

Jimmie Gillom, was born February 19, 1929, in Abbeville, Mississippi to the late Oliver and Susie Gillom. He was converted at an early age and joined East St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Abbeville, Mississippi. He remained a faithful member until his health failed. His service at East St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church included Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Treasurer, and Trustee.

Jimmie received his education from Oxford Training School. In 1948, he was united in holy matrimony to Mae Agnes Young. To this union no children were born. He served as a father and mentor to many of his nieces and nephews.

In 1952, he enlisted into the United States Army at fort Eustis, Virginia, where he served as an ambulance vehicle driver. He received a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. After returning to civilian life, he worked at the University of Mississippi, Holiday Inn, and retired from Emerson Electric Company after 20 years of service. Jimmie was a member of Philadelphia Masonic Lodge Number 387 and a long standing board member of the Hurricane Creek Water Association, where he served as Treasurer.

Jimmie departed this life on July 7, 2020,  at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford Mississippi. He leaves to cherish his memories, one sister: Annie Lee Hill of Oxford, Mississippi and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Agnes Young Gillom; five brothers: Earl W. Gillom, George Gillom, Willie B. Gillom, John Henry Gilliam, and Oliver Gillom, Jr. and one sister: Lena Mae Gillom Williams.
