Laverne Hilliard Foster, was the fifth of nine children born to Harvey and Velma Duff Hilliard, in Oxford, Mississippi. She accepted Christ at an early age at Second Baptist Church. She later joined St. Paul C.M.E. Church before returning to Second Baptist Church where she served on the Mother's Board and remained a member until her death.
Laverne attended school at Oxford Training School and was a faithful O.T.S. Alumni and was an active patriarch of the civil rights movement. She loved attending church, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Laverne enjoyed life.
She was married to Bob Foster, who preceded her in death but was blessed with four children from two previous marriages.
After a long battle with cancer and other health conditions, on Wednesday morning, April 22, 2020, while at Oxford Health and Rehab, Laverne made a peaceful transition to be with the Lord. She will be lovingly remember by her children: Sherman (Stella) Buford of Oxford MS, James (Carolyn) Pinson of Houston TX, and Cassandra (Dwight) Johnson of Oxford MS; her brother: Cloray (Yolanda), Hilliard of Chicago IL; her sister: Elizabeth Hilliard of Oxford MS and her sister-in-law: Jurlean Hilliard. She also leaves eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Laverne was preceded in death by her parents: Velma and Harvey Hilliard; her husband: Bob Foster; her son: Thomas Buford, Jr.; and six siblings: J.V., Narvin, Deloris, Lurlean, Melvin and Glenn.
