Leroy Townsend, son of the late Earlene and Joseph E. Townsend, was born June 26, 1951 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He accepted Christ and joined South Salem Missionary Baptist Church and later New Salem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Richard Hairston.
Leroy was united in matrimony to Linda Pearl Avent and to this union a son was born. Linda preceded him in death. Leroy loved being around people and he liked to dance. Leroy learned what it meant to pray, so he prayed often. He loved his family and was very social but quiet man. But after he became ill, he loved to talk, when he could.
On Friday, July 17, 2020 at Oxford Health and Rehab, Leroy gave out, after what had been a long hard fight. He fought hard, determined not to give up He obeyed his call and "gave in" to the Lord's will. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Joseph L. Townsend; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; six sisters: Bertil (James) Cook, Shirley (Artier) Showers, Stella (Hubert) Murry, Darlene (William) Murray, Georgia Lester, and Annie P. Wortham all of Oxford MS: two brothers: Walter Townsend and Melvin Westbrook both of Oxford MS: two sisters-n-law: Betty Bobo and Rosie Avent and one brother-in-law: Garland Avent; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
