Mable Pettis Obituary

Mable Ozella Pettis was born on the 12th day of February, 1929, to the late Mable Stockard Green and Ira Green, Sr., in Oxford, MS and was their youngest child.  She was born in a wooden frame house that was heated by a wood burning stove.  Her parents were education advocates who instilled in their children the importance of an opportunity.  Mable was born during the time of segregation and was pleased to have witnessed the God given equitable improvements that our people and other ethnicities received during her lifetime.

Mother Mable accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. John M.B. Church while also obtaining her education at St. John School and later pursued an associate degree at Rust College.  She united in holy matrimony to the late Teldo Pettis, Sr., and subsequently joined Tobby Tubby M.B. Church. To this union, 14 children were born. Mable was preceded in death by 4 children Liza Bailey, Archie Black, Sr, Lillie Willingham and Arthur Pettis.

She leaves to cherish her memory 10 children: Teldo Pettis, Jr, Joe Pettis, Gwen Walker (Phillip), Ira Dell Brown, Carnelia Fondren (Wade, Sr), Everlean Mathis (Harvey), Johnny Pettis, Nellie Sanders (Paul), Barbara Davis and Darryl Pettis (Helen).

During her Christian journey, Sister Mable served as a dedicated member of the Mother Board, Usher Board and the Missionary Ministries of Tobby Tubby while also diligently supporting her community as well.  She faithfully served in those multiple capacities and assisted others until her health began to decline.  She remained faithful and served where she could while encouraging the next generation.  In fact, two of her most favorite sayings were ‘keep praying non-stop” and “pretty good is hard to beat.”

She was proceeded in death by her six siblings: sisters – Willie Pettis, Lillie Parker and Bessie Gibson; brothers; Ira Green, Jr, Sam Green and Lorienzer Green, Sr.

Mother Mable leaves to cherish her precious memory, 10 devoted children, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.  She was supported by a very faithful niece, Katie “Bell” Dotson, who would always diligently visit whenever possible.  Lastly, she also leaves to cherish her memory a devoted grandson, Derrick L. Mathis, who treated her like a queen.
