Maxine Thompson was born on January 2, 1947, to James “Pap” Thompson and Susie Mae Harris Thompson in Abbeville, Mississippi.
At an early age, Maxine professed a hope in Christ at East St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Abbeville, MS, where she remained a faithful member until her passing. She served devotedly on the Mother’s Board and in the Kitchen Ministry, where she became well known for her macaroni and cheese.
Maxine was a proud graduate of Central High School, Class of 1966. She began her working career at Jitney Jungle, where she was the first African American cashier. She later gained employment at Emerson Electric Company for over 30 years, where she formed many lifelong friendships. She truly cherished staying connected and attended reunions throughout the years. Following the closing of Emerson, Maxine retired from Whirlpool.
Maxine enjoyed working puzzles, watching the news, and especially traveling with her church family. She was affectionately known as the “family secretary,” as she loved organizing and preserving family documents. She also loved gardening and teaching others about it, often saying, “There is a difference between a hill and a mound.” Maxine had a love for fine linens and curtains and took pride in completing handy work using her own tool kits.
Family meant everything to Maxine, and there was nothing she would not do to help those she loved. Her passing leaves the sister circle, broken, yet her spirit will remain with all who knew her.
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, surrounded by her family. She closed her eyes and went home with the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her daughter, Michelle (David) Jones; her grandson, Kobe; her sisters, Burnice “Becky” Thompson, Mae Rita Thompson, and Elaine (Herman) Thompson-Pegues; her brother, John Henry (Jessie) Thompson, all of Oxford, MS; her only living aunt, Mary Alice Garrison of Louisville, KY; sisters-in-law, Jessie Thompson and Jimmie Thompson; a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to her; and a host of cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Susie Thompson; her brothers, James “Toy” Thompson, Eugene Thompson, Arthur Earl “Scooter Bug” Thompson, Melvin Thompson; and Raymond Harris.
