Martha Camille (Gater) Carothers

Martha Camille Carothers, daughter of the late Webster and Carrie (Redmond) Gater, was born May 30, 1940, in Lafayette County, Mississippi. Martha accepted Christ and was a member of Cypress Grove M.B. Church in Oxford, Mississippi.

Martha received her early childhood education at Cypress Grove School, which is now the Cypress Grove M.B. Church in Oxford. Martha was united in matrimony to William Carothers and was a wife, a homemaker, and the mother of seven children. Her husband, William,  preceded her in death. Martha was a hard worker. She was employed at Motts until an arm injury rendered her unable to work, so she retired. 

Martha enjoyed cooking, gardening, watching old westerns, listening to music, and being social with friend. But by far, her favorite past time was fishing. She was known to many as "The Fishing Lady." You could find her most days on the fish bank with her friends, the late Lorine Campbell and the late Deola Johnson.

On Saturday, November 25, 2023, while in her home, and with her loving daughter, Candi and son, Patrick by her side, Martha left this earthly life and went to be with the Lord entering into eternal rest. She will be lovingly missed by her children: Joanne Coffey of Coffeeville MS, Candi (Lee) Hutchins, Paul Carothers, and Patrick Carothers, all of Water Valley MS; four grandchildren whom she raised: Kim Carothers of Coffeeville MS, Milaila Dowsing of Abbeville MS, Rodchadro (Desiree) Carothers of Oxford MS and Brittney Dowsing of Shreveport LA; her siblings: Mary Carothers of Storm Lake IA, Lottie Baker of St. Louis MO, Ruth Bates of Kansas City MO, Moses Gater, Jethero (Lenora) Gater and Jerrry Gater all of Sikeston MO; 20 grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren;  a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. And she also leaves her caretaker: Emma Lou Benson, who will miss her deeply.

Along with her parents and her husband, Martha was preceded in death by four brothers: John Robert Gater, B.B. Gater, Willie Gater, and Webster Gater, Jr.; three children: Rosie Carothers, William Lynn Carothers, and Donald L. Carothers and two grandchildren: Taruno Carothers and Joshua Hutchins.
