Mary Wortham, daughter of the late Fred and Hazel (Stokes) Jones, was born January 29, 1948, in Oxford, MS and received her education from Oxford Training School.
She was united in matrimony to Jessie Wortham and to this union, three children were born.
Cooking was one of Mary’s favorite things to do and she did it well. She was employed as a cook by the Oxford Country Club for several years until it closed, and she then worked as a cook for Larson’s Big Star. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, you could probably find her sewing, spending time with her siblings, or her grandchildren. Oh, how she loved her grandchildren!
On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Mary passed away at Tippah Hospital in Ripley, MS. She will be missed dearly.
Left to mourn her passing, yet cherish her memory are her children, Georgia Mae Wortham and Jessie Wortham (Frances), both of Oxford, MS; grandchildren, Lashetta Coleman, Shanicwa Coleman, Nigel Crawford, Jabaris Jones, Tymbaland Mathis, Jordan Wortham, Allen Dunn, Jessie Wortham, Meranda Wortham, Mariha Dunn, Malaysia Mathis and Cayden Fountain, all of Oxford, MS; eight great-grandchildren; a bonus daughter: Maria Mathis; siblings, Juanita Jones Shaw, Richard Jones, Loumamie McCann, and Della Tompkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hazel Jones; son, James Allen Jones; great-grandson, Ja’Micheal Coleman; siblings, Edward, Charles, George, James, Billy Wayne, James “Dedo”, Edward (Pee Wee), and Marlean.
