Reginald Eddy Johnson, the second of five children born to Vera B. Johnson and Louis D. Johnson, was a cherished son and a beloved brother. Known for his strong work ethic and gentle nature, he was always ready to lend a helping hand. Reginald had a generous spirit, often giving away his belongings to those he believed would benefit from his kindness.
Born on December 29, 1940, Reginald graduated from Oxford Training School in Oxford, Mississippi, in May 1960. He furthered his education at Tougaloo College, Rust College, the University of Illinois, and the University of Mississippi, focusing on math, premed, and electrical engineering. Reginald was exceptionally talented in mathematics, even serving as a substitute teacher for Algebra and Trigonometry at Central High School in Oxford, Mississippi.
He accepted Christ at a young age and became a member of Burns United Methodist Church, now known as Oxford First U.M. Church. Later, he joined Buford Chapel U.M. Church where he was an active church member and a powerful baritone singer in the church choirs, including the Rust College Acapella Choir. Reginald also dedicated time as a Sunday school teacher.
Throughout his life, Reginald held various jobs, but he was particularly known for his work alongside his father at West Side Cleaners in Batesville, Mississippi. He found joy in greeting guests at the Oxford Health and Rehab Center, a role he cherished until his health began to decline. Reginald loved engaging with others, sharing his extensive knowledge on a variety of subjects, and enjoying intellectual discussions. His deep love for his family and faith in God were central to his life.
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Reginald was called home by the Lord to find peace and rest. He is remembered fondly by his aunt, Margie Nell (Spencer) Mathis, as well as his nephews: Timmy Frieson and Isaac Slate, Jr.; His nieces: Phyllis Johnson (Jimmy) Payne, Rodanthi Slate (Darnell) Lewis, Robbie Slate (Roderick) Hart, and Melissa Johnson (Toure’) Lee; along with a multitude of great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law: Cassandra Johnson, cousins, and many friends and acquaintances will also cherish his memory.
Reginald was preceded in death by his parents: Vera B. Johnson and Louis D. Johnson; as well as his sister: Flora Johnson Slate, and his brothers: Marshall Johnson, Dwight Johnson, and Royale Johnson.
Please keep the Johnson family lifted in prayer, especially Reginald's aunt/sister, Margie Nell Mathis.
