Roderick Henderson Obituary

In Loving Memory of Roderick Leon Henderson Sr.

Roderick Leon Henderson Sr. was born on July 26, 1960, in Lexington, Mississippi, and peacefully departed from this world on December 22, 2023. He was the second oldest of six children born to the late Robert Lee and Dorothy Burton Henderson. Roderick accepted Christ at an early age and joined Second Baptist Church.

Roderick's journey in life was marked by various accomplishments and a vibrant spirit. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1978. His pursuit of education led him to Jackson State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1982. His time spent at JSU held a special place in his heart. Later, he furthered his academic achievements by obtaining a Master's degree in Political Science from Texas Southern University in Houston, TX.

In 1983, Roderick married Melba Bracey, and soon after moved to Houston, TX. They later welcomed their son, Roderick Leon Henderson II. It was in Houston that Roderick's entrepreneurial spirit flourished. Over the years, he held diverse jobs, that allowed his social wings to soar and eventually became the owner of his own trucking company and later his home service company. In 1996, Roderick found a companion in Kim Yvette Stubblefield. Through this union, he gained a daughter in love , Taylor Nkemdilim Nzimiro, and the couple went on to have two more children, Hannah Elaine Henderson (Pettus) and Hunter J. Hezekiah Henderson. Roderick was a proud and devoted father, leaving behind four children: Roderick Leon Henderson II (Jaclyn Ingram), Taylor Nkemdilim Nzimiro, Hannah Elaine Henderson Pettus (Reginald Jr.), and Hunter J. Hezekiah Henderson, all of Houston, TX. His passing is deeply mourned by his siblings: Dr. Deborah Joyce McKinney (Bobby) of Jackson, Tennessee; Sidney D. Henderson of Oxford, Mississippi; Dr. Hattie Elaine Henderson of Houston, TX; and Judge Doris Elcenia Henderson Causey (Tracy ) of Richmond, Virginia and sister in law Joanna Sisk Henderson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Kennard Henderson (Joanna), who passed away in 2013. Roderick's legacy continues through his four beloved grandchildren: Mali Bem Nikel Gassaway (8), Meta Seren Gassaway (4), Memphis Jorrod Gassaway (3), and Reginald Renee Pettus III (1), all residing in Houston, TX. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Known for his impeccable style, Roderick was a smooth dresser who exuded charm wherever he went. His sense of humor brightened the lives of those around him, and his passion for exploration led him to become a world traveler.
