Rorean Houston

Mrs. Rorean Burt Houston was born on May 4, 1932, to Linder Burt and Amy Taylor.  “Tootsie”, as she was affectionately called, accepted Christ as a young girl and joined Harrrisonville Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi. She later moved her membership to Second Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her transition.  Rorean served in multiple positions within the church to include, Superintendent and Teacher of Sunday School, President of the Missionary Society, first female appointed to the Trustee Board, a member of the Mother Board, member of the Heriones of Jericho and President and Vice-President of the Senior Choir. She sang with the Second Baptist choir and Tallahatchie Oxford Missionary Baptist Association.

Rorean was united in holy matrimony to Wilton Greene, Sr. on September 10, 1948, and to this union six children were born.  She later married Clinton Houston on June 12, 1962, in which one child was born.  The couple remained married until Clinton’s transition on December 25, 1986.

Rorean was employed at Star Laundry Cleaners for thirteen years. Later, she worked at Kellwood Company as a Line Supervisor for over twenty years until the plant closed in 1986.  At this time, she elected not to work outside her home so that she could care for her husband and mother during their illness. She was a caregiver for her mother from 1983 until her transition in 2006.  Rorean loved to sew and worked as a seamstress for several organizations and families in Oxford. 

Through the years, she loved fishing, cooking, reading, traveling, singing, and spending time with her family.

On Friday, June 30, 2023, Rorean transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home surrounded by family.  She was proceeded in death by her parents and her husband. Her memories will be cherished by seven children, Gwen McDaniel of Fayetteville, GA, Wilma (Robert) Scales of Lithonia, GA, Alvra Jenkins of Jackson, MS, Wilton (Jean) Greene of Aurora, IL, Rosalind (Joseph) Brundy of Chester, VA, Joanna (Tommy) Marshall of Ridgeland, MS and Arnold Houston of Oxford, MS; brother, Alfred (Carla) Patton of Memphis, TN, sister, Effie Burt of Oxford, MS; ten additional brothers and sisters (The Burt family); seventeen (17) grandchildren, thirty-one (31) great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
