Sam was born on July 23, 1952, in Oxford-Lafayette, MS to the late Bob and Idell (Mitchell) Jones. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1970, attended Northwest Community College in Senatobia MS, and was employed at United Parcel Service (UPS) for 30 years in Batesville MS Center.
He professed a hope in Christ at Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, MS, and later united with Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, MS where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and adult teacher.
On August 28, 1971, he was united in holy matrimony to Sarah Robinson, and two this union two sons were born Kevin and Rodney.
Sam had a passion for people which was expressed in his many efforts in the community and political work. He served as an activist in his community as well as Union Steward while at UPS. He taught Sunday School and was involved in the Boy Scouts. He also served as vice president and president of the Oxford-Lafayette County NAACP, president of the Young Men Progressive Club of Oxford-Lafayette County, and vice-chairman of the Lafayette County Democratic Executive Committee.
He was a lover of music, good bar-b-que, and motorcycles. He was known for his wisdom, compassion, and community engagement on all levels receiving numerous awards and recognition for his community service.
On Monday, January 1, 2022, Sammy “Sam” L. Jones, loving father of two children, passed away at age 69.
He is survived by his two children, Kevin Jones of McKinney TX and Rodney Jones of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Julian Jones of Oxford MS, Kevin Jones II, and Brandon Jones both of Jackson, MS; his brothers John (Pamela) Jones and Bobby Jones both of Oxford MS, as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his father, Bob, his mother, Idell, and his sister, Della.
