Shirley Ann Townsend was born June 13, 1949, in Lafayette County, Mississippi, to the late Joseph E. and Earlene Pegues Townsend. Shirley accepted Christ at an early age and joined South Salem M.B. Church and later in life she united with Burns U.M. Church (now Oxford First UM Church).
Shirley received her education in the Oxford school district at Oxford Training School. She went on to marry David Cook and to this union one child was born, a son, Tyrone. Both Tyrone and David preceded her in death. She later married Artier Showers and he remains her special friend.
Shirley was employed at Baptist Memorial Hospital for many years in the House Keeping department. She was known for that smile and robust personality. She loved to eat out, cook out, and shop. The girl loved shopping. She was truly blessed and would say, “I owe it all to the Lord.”
On Friday, March 19, 2021, at Baptist Memorial Hospital/NM, the Lord saw that she had fought a good fight and gently closed her eyes to be at rest.
Shirley Ann Showers will be lovingly remembered by her siblings: Bertil (James Allen) Cook, Stella (Hubert) Murray, Darlene (William) Murray, Georgia Lester, Walter Townsend, Annie (Scott) Wortham, and Melvin Westbrook, all of Oxford MS; a step son: David Cook, Jr., of Oxford MS and special friends, Artier Showers and Odelia Delbridge, both of Oxford MS. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Earlene Townsend; her son and his father: Tyrone and David Cook; and siblings: Earl Townsend, Jr., Josephine Williams, and Leroy Townsend, and step son: Tony Cook.
