Thomas Martin Obituary

Thomas Anthony Martin, son of the late Percy and Ida Pearl Woods Martin, was born August 6, 1946, in Oxford, Mississippi. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age at North Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Taylor, Mississippi.

Thomas received his education in the Oxford School District and graduated from Central High School with the class  of 1964. Thomas was a popular student at Central High School where he earned the nickname “Sweet T” that would forever define his reputation.

After graduating in 1964, Thomas relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he embarked on a career as a cook. However his aspirations extended beyond culinary work, so he sought a better opportunity in the steel industry. Consequently, he relocated to Gary, Indiana where he secured employment as a steel worker at Gary Works Steel Mill.

In 1966, Sweet T’s life took a dramatic turn when he was drafted into the United States Army. While in the Army, he distinguished himself in the Vietnam War earning numerous medals and a Bronze Star. Upon his discharge in 1972, Sweet T returned to civilian life.

It was during this time that Sweet T met and fell in love with Anna Rose Anderson, a divorced mother of five. He provided invaluable support to Anna and her five children, and together they welcomed four more children into their family: Monique Anderson, LaNikwai Anderson, Nakea Anderson, and Tihomas Anderson.

Years later, Sweet T met and fell in love with Gladys Triggs, another divorced mother. He extended his support to Gladys and her two children, and together they welcomed Thomas Martin, Jr.

Thomas’ life was marked by a profound love for his family and a commitment to hard work and perseverance. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to Gary Works Steel Mill, embodying the principle of leading by example through his unwavering dedication and cheerful outlook. His beliefs in working hard and being happy guided his personal and professional life, resulting in a fulfilling and meaningful existence.

Thomas is preceded in death by two children: Monique and Tihomas Anderson; one step-grandson: David Walker; his parents: Ida Pearl Woods Martin and Percy Martin; one brother: William (Billy) Martin; and one sister: Freda Martin Gipson.

Thomas leaves to cherish his memory three children: LaNikwai and Nakea Anderson of Merrillville, Indiana and Thomas Martin, Jr. of Arlington, Texas; five step-children: Elbony (Jason) Powell of Yukon, Oklahoma, Antonia (Victor) Young, Sr., of Gary, Indiana, Tymiko (Paul) Washington of Merrillville, Indiana, Sean and Tiara Anderson of Gary, Indiana; twelve grandchildren; twelve step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two brothers: Murray Martin of Monticello, Indiana and Dennis Martin of Oxford, Mississippi; one sister: Joyce Martin Logan of Oxford, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Thomas is missed by family, friends, and those who had the privilege of being part of his life. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.

Thomas made his transition to his eternal home on Monday, October 28, 2024, while in his home.

Please keep the Martin family in your prayers.
