Thomas Lee Thompson

Following a prolonged illness, Thomas Lee Thompson was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 18, 2021, at the age of 69.

Affectionately known by many monikers such as “Tommy or Tom” to his friends and family, Thomas was born on September 22, 1951.

Thomas was baptized in the Methodist Church at an early age and continued his relationship with the Lord throughout the rest of his life.

Thomas was raised in the West Spring Hill community of Oxford, MS where he graduated from Central High School in 1969. While in high school, Thomas excelled at many things. He was Member of Hi-Y, Tri Hi Y, School Choir, an honor student, and an All-Conference offensive/ defense football player.

After completing High School, Thomas went on to complete a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. Additionally, Thomas was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

During his lifetime, Thomas distinguished himself in many areas. He served in the U.S. Army, played football with the San Diego Chargers in the National Football League. He was the first African American Assistant Football Coach at the University of Mississippi as well as the first African American Trailways Bus Co Terminal Manager in Knoxville, TN.

Thomas was also known for his larger-than-life personality, warm smile, quick wit, and hearty laugh. He never met a stranger and was often referred to as the life of the party.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, four of his brothers and his only sister.

Thomas leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Joan, his brother; Willie (Rhodis) Thompson, Memphis, TN, his children; Nigel Ahmad (LaNikki) Thompson, Columbus, OH, Kristin NeEma Gaither-Thompson, Cincinnati, OH, Teresa (Louis) Besses, Tulsa, OK, Keith Driver, Southaven, MS, his grandchildren; Lexi, Jeremiah, LaNila and Kylan, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
