Wallace "Sweet Child" Walker, Jr.

Wallace Walker, Jr., son of the late Wallace Walker and Nettie Lee Alford, was born in Panola County, Mississippi, on December 2, 1945. In later years, the Walker family moved to Oxford, Mississippi, and Wallace joined Burns U.M. Church and where he went to school and graduated from Central High School with the "Class of 1964."

The same year, after high school, Wallace enlisted into the United States Army where he served a short duty detail and received an Honorable Discharge. Upon his return home, he worked many jobs, notably, shoe salesman at Shainberg's Department Store located at East Gate Shopping Center, construction worker, baker with the University of Mississippi and a cook with Valley Foods and Gold Strike Casino from which he retired. 

Wallace was a man of service, once he returned home, he joined the Mississippi Army National Guard and after retirement, he joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW-Post 12121) and was an active member until his health began to fail.

Wallace was united in matrimony to Barbara Hewlett and to this union four children were born. He later married Linda Gates and gained two bonus children. Wallace enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it was cooking out, or fishing you see the joy written all across his face. But baseball/soft could really make him smile, it came in a close second place to his family. When he rounded that diamond, he would be in high gear, headed home. 

When his health declined, Wallace returned to Oxford to be with his children and Barbara became his primary caregiver when he became a Gentiva Hospice patient. After a long, hard fight, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Wallace took on final lap around that diamond. His eyes were focus on HOME. His children on the side line watching. He put it in high gear and he slid across home plate. Umpire (Jesus) yelled "SAFE." He touched home plate with a smile to complete his game of life.

Wallace leaves to cherish his memories. his son: Wallace Lee Walker of Oxford MS; his daughters: Anissa Boles and Alexia (Walter) Walker-Jarrett both of Oxford MS, Sherzard McEwen-Ashford and Camecia Jones both of Memphis TN 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two bonus children: Adriane Parker and Darlyne Parker both of Batesville MS, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Wallace was preceded in death by his parents: Wallace Walker, Sr. and Nettie L. Burnette; siblings: Annie Bell Blackwell, William Phillips and Katherine Vaughn; a son: Hallace Dee Walker; a grandson: Kendal McEwen and a son-in-law: Christopher L. Boles, Sr.
